“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” ~ James 1:19
Learning to hear from God can have a huge impact on the way we listen to each other.
Is it just me or is there a real problem with people adding to what people say in our world today?
Just because I say that certain people really shouldn’t have guns in their hands doesn’t mean that I am against the right to bear arms…
Just because I do not believe in eternal concious torment doesn’t mean that I am a universalist who doesn’t believe in justice…
When I tell people that I don’t vote (for reasons I have not fully disclosed) it does not mean that I am unpatriotic or not for my country.
If I tell you that I am all for renewable energy and getting winged off of foreign oil, why am I called a bleeding heart liberal?
And if I don’t embrace many of the days most prevelent accepted and taught theologies (Studies of God) that doesn’t mean that I am not in a very real, personal, working and ongoing relationship with God myself.
I can go on and on but I believe this is enough to make my point here.
It’s just like when we are learning to hear from God on a matter, one of the greatest disciplines we can learn as a Christian is learning how not to add to what The Spirit of The Lord is saying to us…
Only go with God on what you have heard and stay there.
Listen and if need be just wait… Don’t get ahead of Him (like we often do) and try to add our own best thinking to something He is only starting to explain…
When God starts talking, you will learn that if he wants you to know anymore than what he has already divulged or if he needs you to do or say anything at all in a matter… He will let you know when it’s time. Wait on Him.
Shut out and if need be even rebuke all of the distracting thoughts and confusion that tries to come in and dull your clear hearing and God given direction.
Know clearly what The Word of The Lord was to you specifically and then stick with it. Put faith in His promises and direction to you and be careful of who you share it with, as Jesus said, you don’t want to cast your pearls before the swine who will trample over them and then attack you.
It’s so important to choose your freinds and council wisely.
Then keep The word of The Lord to you like a seed planted in your heart and guard it like you would a precious jewel.
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” ~ Proverbs 4:23
Truth be told, with God we often have to;
“Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.” ~ Romans 3:4
Personally, before I am thrown into anyones religious box or assigned to anyone elses political agenda, I choose to remain fixed right here in the middle of my freedom as a Christian following The Spirit of Christ.
I refuse to be swayed fully by either the religion or politics of our day and I am comfortable staying seated in Christ seeking all of the facts that I can get in a matter, so I can place them in the scales of my own God given heart and then in my own quiet time of prayer and communion, arrive at my own God given conclusions.
The key here though is as I have stated above.
The key is to not add to the answers I have been given but then to Wait on The Lord for anymore directives he may want to later give…
In His Love, Pastor Scott
