I have a sort of weighty topic that I would like to say something on. I will attempt to keep it short and on point. I have seen numerous times in Ministry and in my own life experience, people who’s thought processes (when taken over by chemical dependency or various other forms of mental illness) lead them to do and behave in ways that go against their inherent knowing, heart and will. Literally causing them to become someone that they really are not and to do things that they never would.
For example; a young man or woman who would never steal or lie and believe both are wrong and shameful get’s hooked on a drug and is now all of a sudden stealing to stay high and lying about it! Another example could be someone suffering turrets who honestly feels it’s wrong to shout out obscenities but continually finds themselves doing it anyways! A person know’s they need to change their eating habits because the doctor say’s it’s starting to cause some serious issues in ones health and they keep pulling into fast food joints ordering off the dollar menu!
What I have seen over and over again is the need for some to almost create a pseudo personality (Also known as border line personality or dissociative identity disorder.)
For example again; the young beautiful and sweet helpful young lady who grew up in Church named Cathy is now ripping and running the streets, lying and scheming under her new street name “Kat Killa.” Now Cathy isn’t really “Kat Killa.” This is simply the pseudo personality that had to be created to accommodate all the addicted and shameful wrong doings that are being done contrary to Cathy’s real, loving and genuine self.
The same kinds of (splits) can happen when traumatic events like rape or prostitution have taken place. Especially when one feels personally responsible for such events and almost always to my own experience these kinds of “False Identities” take root in ones own deep self hatred, blame and shame. When someone becomes someone they truly are not and to have done and said things that they would never have done or said it can become easier to embrace or allow it all to be done and said by that cohabiting character that they really are not…
We can see this same logic and understanding applied across the board to many mental illnesses. When one wants deep down to just be happy but is suffering from severe clinical depression. When one strives outwardly to find peace but is riddled with phobia’s, fears and tormenting anxiety deep within. When we find ourselves doing what we hate.
Now as a Minister and not a Psychiatrist and as one who seeks to Encourage and not a Psychologist. I prescribe Scriptures … Not Prescriptions.
Please let me add though, that in no way do I devalue the proper use of certain medications to help people suffering from mental illness. I have seen when Psychiatry, Psychology and Spirituality work closely and correctly together great good, much hope and healing obtained. So as a Minister, I would prescribe some of the following Scripts to be taken.
“We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.” ~ Romans 6:7
Isn’t that a great word for such a complicated situation. We must have all “False Identities” and “Pseudo Personalities” “Depressions and Fears” crucified in Christ so that we may live again free and in the fullness of our genuine born again selves.
“And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.” ~ Romans 6:8
“If the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” ~ John 8:36
Now if we die to our old “False Selves” entered either by emotional wounding and demand or by our own willing self yielding. The Good News is that we can NOW reclaim that which has been lost and loose The Holy Spirit who has an amazing ability to drive out all of these lesser, lying and destructive spirits.
Listen to this amazing word from Paul (a murderer turned Apostle);
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” ~ Galatians 2:20
Just a few more degree’s in and we can drink deep The Words of Jesus himself;
“O Righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.” ~ John 17:25-26
In conclusion here let me say this….Who we are as “Christians” having been forgiven by God for every wrong, hurtful and shameful thing we have ever done to ourselves or others… having received and truly acknowledged his forgiveness and having asked Jesus to come into our heart, mind soul and spirit to reign and rule by The Power of The Holy Spirit… Who we are now are in fact Born again Children of The Most High God!!!
“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” ~ Luke 12:32
I hope this can bring some understanding, freedom and newness of life to someone! Deliverance is the children’s bread!
“Christ in you, the hope of glory.” ~ Colossians 1:27
