Lying Scribes and Translators

“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us,’ when, in fact, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie?”

– Jeremiah 8:8

(The Prophet Jeremiah rebuking the scribes’ handling of the law of Moses

during the reign of Josiah in the 7th century.)

“This people draw near with their mouth but their fear of me is a commandment taught by men.”

– Isaiah 29:13

(The Prophet Isaiah propesies judgment to a wayward priesthood in the 8th century.)

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban’ (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

– Mark 7:8-13

(Jesus in the 1st century tells them the same as the Prophets did, that they have long been twisting the truth to suit their own agendas.)

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

– Timothy 2:15

(The Apostle Paul also in the 1st century, encouraging Timothy to study, so as not to make the same error of the scribes and priests that had long come before them.)
